Detroit Ad Agency Solicits Car Shoots on Spec | Good Thing/Bad Thing?

I ran across an interesting post on PDNpulse.com which
made me think of my community at Emancipated Artist. The post is pretty
short, and I think it worth checking out: http://www.pdnpulse.com/2010/08/detroit-agency-solicits-car-shoots-....

The "Cliff Notes" version is:
  • The ad agency, Latcha, is working for the automotive brand Lincoln.
  • The agency is asking photographers to "assist in collaborating and evolving the style of a major automotive brand!"
  • Fine print informs photographers that "by participating in this exploratory project, you are agreeing to do so
without reimbursement from Latcha or Lincoln."
  • If Latcha likes your sample, you might be eligible to bid for actual jobs.
  • The author, David Walker, feels this is a "new and brazen approach" ... where Latcha will compile a pool of photographers
for future jobs ... but with the realization "they'll be negotiating
with a pool of photographers who are willing to work for free."
Agree with David Walker? Disagree?

One point-of-view is it gives you an opportunity to get your work in front
of the agency, but does it mean you'll be hurting your negotiation
chances in the future?

Any of you experience this before? What are your thoughts?

I'm interested.

My point of view is that every work should be paid or at least compensated one way or another. Unless you do it for personal reasons (to gain experience, popularity, fight for a just cause, passion). Also, do you bring your own equipment (camera, computer, softwares...)? All this costs money and depends if you depend or not on your work as an artist to pay for your bills. If you do everything for free you end up bankrupt someday....

I think it is important to get your name out there. Internships work the exact same way. It is not fun at all to work basically for free, but when it comes down to it experience within the industry is what you need. It's so hard to get a decent job these days that negotiating for a higher wage (in this situation) is almost stupid. Get your foot in the door, get exposure, and then worry about getting paid more.

I would really like to hear what other photographers think about this...
