For photo enthusiasts in Portland...
I'm sure a lot of people know this, but Pro Photo Supply in NW Portland sponsors a lot of really great photography and Photoshop classes. Some of them, like the upcoming Nikon seminars, are really cheap $5. Even their more "expensive" courses, such as Basic Photoshop, are pretty reasonable when compared to similar college classes.

I think the upcoming Dramatic Outdoor Lighting Seminar at Mt. Hood could be really good. I to learn how to take great ski shots!

Yeah, just go into the shop and ask to check some models out, they are super helpful. I bought my Canon there but the comparable Nikon was a pretty close contender.

If you're looking at getting a cheap, entry-level DSLR, then your best choices are these competing Canon and Nikon models:
Canon Rebel XS (about $550)
Nikon D3000 (about $550)
Canon Rebel XSi (about $650)
Nikon D5000 (about $700)
They are pretty neck-to-neck on features, but I would go for a model with live view, because it's really useful for focusing with certain shots. I tossed back and forth between the two cheapest options for a while, but ended up buying the Canon Rebel XS because of the live view feature, and I'm glad I did.
